Road Legality
Are Carpat e-bikes legal to ride on UK roads?
Yes. Carpat e-bikes are certified EAPCs (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles), which means they are fully UK road legal. You can ride it on public roads, cycle lanes, and paths without a licence, registration, or insurance — just like a regular bicycle.
What is an EAPC?
An EAPC (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle) is a pedal-assist e-bike that meets specific legal requirements set out in (BS) EN 15194. The motor must not exceed 250 W and must cut off when you reach 25 km/h (15.5 mph). The e-bike must also meet stringent safety requirements for hazardous substances, including REACH and RoHS.
Does the motor cut off automatically?
Yes. The motor automatically cuts off at 25 km/h (15.5 mph) or when you stop pedalling. Above that speed you can still pedal under your own power, just without electric assistance.
Do I need a licence, tax, or insurance?
No licence, road tax, or compulsory insurance is required for an EAPC in the UK. Riders must be aged 14 or over.
Electric Drive System
How far can I travel on a single charge?
Range depends on assist level used, battery capacity, total load and riding conditions. Our e-bikes are designed for everyday commuting and leisure rides. Lighter assist levels and flatter terrain will extend range significantly. Climbing hills, riding with flat tires, rough terrain, and higher assist levels will consume battery more quickly and reduce the maximum range that can be achieved.
How long does the battery take to charge?
Charging time varies, but most rides can be topped up overnight. We recommend using the supplied charger and avoiding leaving the battery fully discharged for extended periods.
Can I remove the battery to charge it indoors?
Yes. The battery is removable, making it easy to charge at home, in the office, or anywhere with a standard UK plug socket.
How do I look after the battery?
Store the battery at room temperature, avoid extreme cold or heat, and try to keep it between 20–80% charge for long-term battery health. Refer to the included manual for full care instructions.
Can I install a throttle?
No. Throttles are not EAPC compliant and therefore not legal for use on UK roads. Carpat e-bikes do not have a throttle and do not support the installation of a throttle.
What power does the motor have?
Our e-bikes are fitted with a 250 W motor, which is the maximum permitted power under EAPC regulations. It provides smooth, responsive pedal assistance across all terrain types.
What pedal-assist levels are available?
Our e-bikes have 5 pedal-assist levels, letting you dial in the right amount of support — from a gentle boost for longer rides to maximum assistance for hills and headwinds.
Can I ride without using the motor?
Absolutely. You can switch off the assist entirely and ride your e-bike like a conventional bike at any time.
Is the e-bike suitable for hills?
Yes. The 250 W motor provides meaningful assistance on inclines, making it suitable for hilly routes when used on the appropriate assist level.
